Installed since 2009 in the former gendarmerie of Champs-sur-Tarentainethe Lightning Research Laboratory leaves its historic location.
This unique site specializing in research, study and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of lightning and stormy phenomena could even leave the Cantal department.
Around fifteen scientists
An establishment run by Raymond Piccoliastrophysicist and astronomer by training. The Laboratory team is made up of researchers, engineers and technicians from different disciplines.
Turn an important page
But, after 15 years in the town, the Laboratory and the Storms and Lightning Museum (opened in 2017) are preparing to turn an important page in their history. Indeed, “we will leave this town during the last quarter of 2025” indicates Raymond Piccoli.
It is with great sadness that we prepare for this departure
And added: “this decision was not taken lightly, and it is with great sadness that we prepare for this departure. The premises are no longer really suited to our activities. Champs-sur-Tarentaine has been a place where our scientific, cultural and educational activities have been able to flourish, and we will always maintain a particular attachment to this territory which has seen the birth and growth of many projects. Cantal is a fantastic playground.”
The opportunity is given to thank “the mayor of the town, the team of the Sumène-Artense Tourist Office, the numerous visitors, the loyal partners”.
Future in Cantal?
For the future, the Laboratory and Museum team (whose visits are free) hopes to remain in the Cantal.
But for the moment, the director says he has not had an offer from a community or a company to welcome him to new premises. “It would be a shame to leave Cantal because we are very attached to it. But we would like to find a solution in the north-west of the department, because that is where we could continue our activity.”
Notice to amateurs…
Until then, for the curious and visitors, don't panic: the Museum's visiting area continues its usual activity.
