A 75-year-old man went missing this Wednesday, January 15 after taking refuge on rocks about 1.2 km off the Agon-Coutainville sailing school (Manche), BFM Normandie learned from of the department's firefighters.
The septuagenarian, trapped by the waters, cannot be found despite aerial and nautical reconnaissance “via two lifeboats, teams from the SNSM and the Dragon 50 helicopter”, set up by the emergency services.
“Once the helicopter arrived in the area, having managed to take off despite reduced visibility, the visibility conditions however made the search too dangerous to continue and the helicopter must return to its base,” writes the prefecture.
Search operations have since been handed over to law enforcement for the rest of the night. However, around 10:30 p.m., the maritime prefect of the Channel and the North Sea decided to suspend the search.
