Stade Rennais is preparing to face Ligue 2 team Troyes in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France this Wednesday. However, coach Jorge Sampaoli will have to deal without two of his key players, Arnaud Kalimuendo et Jota. Arnaud Kalimuendo was released during the break on Saturday against OM (1-2), as part of a concussion protocol. Hit violently in the head during this match, Rennes' top scorer will not be fit to play against Troyes, although he should be restored for the reception of Brest in Ligue 1 this weekend.
Jota's prolonged absence
In addition to Kalimuendo, Portuguese winger Jota also stays away from the grounds. Injured in the adductor muscles, he has not yet played in 2025. His return is eagerly awaited by the Rennes staff and supporters, despite increasingly insistent rumors of departure only a few months after his arrival in the Breton capital. His absence deprives Sampaoli of significant offensive options for this high-stakes match despite very little playing time under the orders of the Argentine technician.
The Gomez case and the guardians' dilemma
On the other hand, Colombian striker Carlos Andres Gomeznot selected against Marseille, could return to the group to face Troyes. His presence would provide an additional offensive solution to Sampaoli. Concerning the goalkeepers, Brice Samba and Steve Mandanda are competing to defend Rennes' goals. The Argentine coach seems to want to keep the suspense until the last moment.
Issues and perspectives
This round of 16 in Troyes is of particular importance for Rennes. the Coupe de France undoubtedly represents the last hope of qualifying for a European competition next season. Despite the notable absences, Sampaoli will have to find the winning formula to overcome this obstacle and stay in the race in this competition. A victory would also ideally launch the second part of the season in Ligue 1, where Rennes is finally hoping for a burst of pride.
