The town center of Breteuil (Eure) has nearly fifteen one-way streets, due to its old and narrow construction. There rue du Docteur Brière has been part of this list since December 23, when the new signage was put in place.

From now on, no vehicles are allowed to use this lane from Place du Fourneau towards Rue Gambetta.

Damaged cars

A real headache for some, this decision is a relief for many others, in particular for local residents, annoyed to see their cars being damaged. We met a resident of rue du Docteur Brière, who was largely satisfied with this novelty.

I park in the street and I have to fold down my rearview mirror; it often happens that cars hit it and the mirror comes off.

A local resident

“Some people don’t want to bother going around”

Good news for this local resident, provided that these regulations are respected by everyone. “Despite everything, it still happens that people take the forbidden direction,” testifies the Bretolian.

Perhaps out of habit, or perhaps out of simple refusal to respect the rules? Several perpendicular streets lead to it, “and some motorists don't want to bother going around.” However, the regulations in force do not grant any privileges.

“Traffic made simpler”

But generally speaking, most of these road users seem to share the opinion of local residents. “I always wondered why it wasn't one-way, I think it should have been the case a long time ago,” remarks a passerby accompanied by her son.

A resident of the historic town of La Guéroulde, she regularly goes to the town center of Breteuil, and for her, “it’s a good thing”. “Traffic is made much simpler, more fluid, it’s much more practical like that,” continues his son. “And then, it doesn’t require a huge detour.”

A narrow passage

For them, driving in both directions on this street with vehicles parked on the sides was far too complicated, and for some time they have avoided it as much as possible.

Even when we had priority, some motorists arriving on the opposite side tended to force their way.

The passerby and her son

Clearly, what was a nightmare for cars was a nightmare for school buses. It often happened that a bus found itself stuck, with little room to maneuver and facing a line of cars.

Whose turn is it?

“When I came home from college, sometimes it could last a long time if the last car didn't intend to back up…” the young man recalls.

As for the residents of Breteuil, many would like to see their street, often very narrow, transformed into a one-way street as well.
