We tested the new electric Vélo’v of the Metropolis

We tested the new electric Vélo’v of the Metropolis
We tested the new electric Vélo’v of the Lyon Metropolis

Despite the thermometer which barely exceeded 0°C, we took our courage, or rather our handlebars in both hands, and tried them for you. They are the new electric Vélo'v which will be deployed throughout the Metropolis of In the night of January 28 to 29replacing old models. They were tested for the first time, Wednesday January 15, by a privileged few.

Bet held for the new electric Velov' in Lyon

The objective behind this preview: check if the specifications imposed by the Metropolis on JCDecaux, a juggernaut of advertising street furniture in charge of making 2,500 new generation bicyclesis respected.

It is clear, without too much suspense, that the first bet is met. That of allowing the 92,000 subscribers of the Vélo'v mobility system to climb to the heights of Lyonparticularly to Fourvière. Climb almost impossible with the previous range.

And yet, the idea that these new green-tinted bikes can climb a height difference of more than 120 meters despite their significant weight leaves one skeptical. A weight which is explained in particular by the presence of a bottom bracket motor “very powerful”according to Raynald Boidin, project operations director at JCDecaux.

New electric Vélo’v: great maneuverability despite a significant weight

THE new Vélo'v don't ask no technical adjustmentafter being withdrawn in one of the 9 250 stations of the territory, which have all been adapted. They are recharged at the station thanks to the attachment system and are automatically adjusted according to effort.

Once the saddle is adjusted to the correct height, we can set off. Today's itinerary is quite short, since it involves a journey from Place Saint-Jean to the Fourvière basilica, i.e. 1.5 kilometers. Surprise from the first pedal stroke: the motor takes effect and takes the machine faster than a classic bike would do. A electric assistance effective for getting started again after stopping on a climb.

The impression of lightness of the Vélo'v is noteworthy, as is its maneuverability. As for the gear changehe is less fluid than that of mechanical bicycles and requires you to stop pedaling. One detail though.

Another small hiccup: heated grips would have been welcome, because a pair of gloves and layers of clothing are not enough on this winter morning.

New tools to ensure the safety of Vélo’v users

Beyond efficiency, JCDecaux focuses on security. The Vélo'v is made up of brake sensors which make it possible to avoid runaway, rear lights which light up each braking et during the nightas well as a unique mechanical padlock with key to limit theft.

In the coming weeks, a support pour smartphone will be added to these numerous gadgets and will allow, in particular, to recharge your phone. The arrival to the Fourvière basilica is without incident. It is even accompanied by the melody of an accordionist sitting in front of the building. Crash test passed!
