This is what we call the magic of the Coupe de France! Bourgoin-Jallieu, resident of National 3, the equivalent of the fifth division, took the scalp of Olympique Lyonnais in the round of 32 on Wednesday evening. At the end of the 90 regulation minutes, the two teams were tied (2-2) and the Nord-Isérois won (4-2) on penalties.
To avoid the same problems as against Feignies/Aulnoye (National 2) in the 32nd finals, Pierre Sage aligned his starting goalkeeper Lucas Perry and tenured Malick Fofana. This did not prevent Bourgoin from dominating and opening the score with Mehdi Moujetzky (20th, 1-0). The Berjallians, however, saw their enthusiasm cut by a resumption of the law in extension of Nemanja Matic (45e, 1-1).
After the break, the FCBJ proved to be less strong in pressing and in transition and could not prevent Lyon from taking the lead through Georges Mikautadze (ex-Seraing), directly replaced by Alexandre Lacazette (64th, 1-2). The Lyon defense was not ruthless and Moujetzky took advantage of an error Warmed Omari to equalize (69th, 2-2). While the two teams had heated situations in the final, notably with Fofana (75th), the qualification was decided on penalties without overtime.
For the record, FC Bourgoin-Jallieu has been none other than OL’s partner club for over a decade…
