The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) issued an alert on Wednesday concerning climatic conditions which could disrupt the operation of domestic fireplaces and water heaters. The body advises you to watch for symptoms such as headaches or nausea, signaling possible carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. If in doubt, it is recommended to contact emergency services via 112.

Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas, is the result of incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, fuel oil or wood. Once inhaled, it binds to hemoglobin, reducing the body’s oxygenation and can cause serious asphyxiation.

In order to limit the risk of poisoning, it is essential to have your heating appliances inspected by a professional, to clean the chimney and to regularly ventilate the living spaces. The installation of a carbon monoxide detector is also strongly recommended.

In the Brussels region, more than 120 cases of CO poisoning are recorded each year, according to data from the environment.brussels organization. Characteristic symptoms include headache, dizziness and nausea.
