Created in 1963 under the leadership of General de Gaulle, the National Order of Merit is the second national order aimed at honoring French citizens. It rewards the distinguished merits acquired either in a public, civil or military service, or in the exercise of a private activity for at least 10 years. The National Order of Merit consists of 3 grades (knights, officers, commanders) and 2 dignities (great officers and large-cross).
This honorary distinction cannot be asked for yourself which is not accompanied by any material or financial advantage. Indeed, you must be proposed by a minister, after studying a file constituted at the request of a central administration, a prefect, an association, a political figure (mayor, deputy, etc.) or a group of at least 50 people (for the citizen initiative). About 14 % of the files are rejected.
-Today, the National Order of Merit has 177,000 members, 50% of which are women for civil promotions. In total, in addition to 60 years of existence, 337,000 people have appointed or promoted since the creation of the order.
