Tomorrows that are disillusioning… In the aftermath of Christmas partiesthe city of Beaucaire, located in the south-east of Gard, is being talked about again. She was sentenced by the court of Nimes (Gard) has 19,000 euros fine. The decision has been official since Wednesday January 15, 2025.
The motive? Having maintained the Provençal nativity scene Christmas in the hall of city hall.
An installation reported and condemned
The case begins on Wednesday December 4, 2024, with the report of the French League for Human and Citizen's Rights, to justice on the presence of said crèche within the Gard town hall. The association deplores this in the name of the principle of separation from the Church (the nursery) and the State (the town hall) in force in France.
Informed of this report, Mayor Nelson Chaudon was quick to react, explaining that through this installation, he wanted to “respect and perpetuate the traditions locales ».
The town hall had already been condemned on Friday December 20 by the administrative court of Nimes (Gard) upon immediate removal from the crèche. But the court decision was not implemented.
-Second judgment
The Gard magistrates announced this Wednesday, January 15 that the city has been condemned again in this same case. The municipality must pay a fine of 15 200 euros to the French State and 3 800 euros to the Human Rights League.
The city was also condemned to 1,000 euros fine per day late. The city not having acted within the deadline, the magistrates decided to increase the bill.
The daily fine is quintupled. The municipality will have to settle 5 000 euros per day of delay. According to our colleagues atInfoccitaniethe date of withdrawal of the crèche is set at Tuesday February 4, 2025.
According to the first calculations carried out, if Nelson Chaudon does not remove his crèche before that day, the overall fine could then exceed the 100 000 euros. Santon is expensive.
