An online petition and a much more formal request sent to the Valais cantonal court aim for the reinstatement of Roland Jaquenoud as a teacher at the Saint-Maurice Abbey College. First suspended, the canon, suspected of sexual abuse, was dismissed in 2024 by the Education Service.
The former ad interim father-abbot of the congregation of canons of Saint-Maurice was suspended from his teaching position in November 2023, in order to clarify his personal situation.
Case closed
At the end of October 2024, after 13 months of investigation, Valais justice closed the case of alleged sexual abuse within the Church, in Valais. Concerning the Latin and Greek teacher, a classification order had been issued in the absence of criminally reprehensible behavior.
-At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, even before the end of the Public Prosecutor’s investigation, the Education Service chose to dismiss the canon. He therefore found himself without a workstation for the current school year. This is still the case today.
No comment on the case
“I ask that his dismissal which sanctions an act alleged without any certainty more than 20 years ago and which does not fall under criminal law be canceled out of respect for the presumption of innocence”, we can read in a petition circulating online. “Roland Jaquenoud should not be treated more harshly because of his status as canon of the abbey of Saint-Maurice,” she adds.
Questioned this Tuesday morning by Keystone-ATS, the head of the Valais Education Service Jean-Philippe Lonfat confirmed that an appeal against the decision to terminate his employment contract had been filed with the Cantonal Court. “I cannot therefore comment further on an ongoing administrative procedure.”
