In 2024, the maternity of Vernon (Your) recorded 601 birthsor 59 fewer than in 2023. A figure which corresponds to the national trend but which does not prevent it from being ranked twelfth out of 393 maternity hospitals in the ranking established by Le Point.
According to data published by INSEE, births are down compared to 2023. “In cumulative form January to October, and taking into account the fact that 2024 is a leap year, the number of births decrease of 2.6% in 2024 compared to 2023. This drop was -6.9% in 2023,” indicates INSEE in its latest monthly birth report published on November 28, 2024.
As for the teams, we remain optimistic.
“Last year we didn't go down so we may be taking a bit of the backlash. What we observed is not that Vernonnaises give birth more, but that they flee the hospital less and come to give birth more here,” analyzes Doctor Hélène Muszynski, head of the gynecology and obstetrics department at the maternity ward. from Vernon.
To Vernon and his maternity level 1patients generally come to seek delivery more physiological and the less medicalized possible.
37 deliveries in a natural room
In 2024, the first baby had been slow to show up at Vernon. Elyah came into the world on Thursday January 4, 2024 to the delight of his parents, Benjamin and Laura.
In Vernon, other babies were in more of a hurry, like this mother who gave birth… in the corridor. Not even time to reach the delivery room.
The year ended on December 31, 2024 at 2:26 p.m. with the birth of little Ali, 601e baby. In 2025, the first birth took place on January 1st in the afternoon.
In total, three delivery rooms can accommodate patients. A nature room is also available to future mothers and co-parents.
Families are then installed in one of the fourteen rooms during their post-delivery stay.
16.9% cesarean sections
Concerning the rate of cesareans, scheduled or emergency, the figures are stable in Vernon: in 2024, it is 16,9 % (17% in 2023 and 16.6% in 2022).
» We have an advantage in Vernon, which is that the unit is very close to the maternity ward, so we don't have to go through the entire hospital to get there in the event of an emergency cesarean section. We have an operating team on site with an anesthesiologist. All this makes it possible to perform a cesarean section in 15 minutes,” notes Dr. Muszynski.
-A maternity ward on a human scale
Among mothers who have passed through the Vernon hospital, we speak of a “small maternity ward human size where we are pampered, listened to, advised”, as evidenced by this review left on social networks.
“We have patients who come from far away. Sometimes even from the Paris region, near Mantes-la-Jolie in particular,” underlines Estelle David, midwife at the maternity ward.
In 2024, 37 deliveries took place in nature roomor 6.2%.
Knowing that this figure does not take into account the passages in the nature room for labor, and which end in the traditional delivery room.
The reputation of the establishment could further evolve thanks to the 12th place, out of 393 maternity hospitals, obtained in the ranking produced by Le Point magazine at the end of 2024.
Maternity ranked 12th out of 393 by Le Point
In 2024, Le Point produced 136 rankings in 85 disciplines by rating the French public and private hospitals which responded to its questionnaire. “Each year, Le Point carries out an in-depth analysis of French health establishments. This ranking is based on precise criteria, such as the quality of care, the success rate of interventions, the equipment available, and patient satisfaction. This work rigorous aims to provide reliable benchmarks to guide patients and highlight establishments that excel in their specialties”, specifies the CH Eure-Seine in its press release. Concretely, hospitals received a link with statistics to complete and return to the magazine. The latter was then responsible for establishing scores out of 20 and classifying the establishments in different categories. The maternity wards of Vernon and Évreux, counted as the same entity, came 12th out of 393 establishments. “It is with great pride that we share with you the results obtained by our establishment in the 2024 ranking of Le Point magazine, an essential reference for assessing the quality of care in France. Thanks to the commitment of our teams and their expertise, our maternity ward ranks among the best in France, offering quality care to our patients and their newborns”, rejoices the CH Eure-Seine.
“I don’t really know if this will change anything but we will gain visibility. It's positive for our image, we take it. The goal for us, thanks to this notoriety, is also this: for people to have confidence and give birth less elsewhere,” rejoices Hélène Muszynski.
Explain to better prepare
This report of trust is also established in the monitoring of patients.
Carried out in the hospital or in town, the prenatal interview allows future mothers to prepare for all the eventualities of childbirth and to obtain information.
“Everyone imagines their dream birth but it never really happens as we planned. L'prenatal interview allows us to discuss the birth plan and the different possibilities: cesarean section or not, to choose a level one, two or three maternity ward. This is an opportunity to explain all the points that we do not have time to address in consultation. There are things to weigh against the reality of childbirth and that is our role to explain that we aim for them to all give birth well », concludes Doctor Muszynski.
