What are the causes of the accident that occurred on Saturday January 11 in the tunnel under Strasbourg station? Two trains collided. For the 130 passengers, the shock was as much physical as psychological.
Twenty-four hours after the tram accident in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), Johan Kirschenbaum left several bruises, aches and the memory of a shock from the accident that he will remember for a long time. After the shock, panic gripped the passengers: 68 of them were injured on Saturday January 11 around 4 p.m.
According to the first elements of the investigation, the lead tram was stopped at a red light on a slope. Suddenly, he went into reverse, hitting the other tram which was parked under Strasbourg station. The train backed up into a tunnel for several hundred meters, gaining more and more speed. A similar accident happened in 1998.
For the moment, investigators do not know the reasons for the accident but rule out a voluntary act by the driver. “A tram is equipped with a black box which collects all electronic operating information, in particular the operation of the brakes and the activity of the driver”explains Emmanuel Anneau, general director of the CTS. The damaged trains can only be removed following the findings of investigators at the scene of the collision.
