In shorts, sneakers, wearing a light windbreaker. It was in this outfit that PGHM emergency services recovered a 26-year-old young man at Cap de Laubère in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

“It’s a trailer who left on foot without crampons for this route. Near the summit it was blocked by difficult weather conditions. Hard snow, wind”, tells us the permanence of the PGHM. The young man was able to contact his mother who alerted the emergency services. “It’s a story with a happy ending. We were able to engage a helicopter. If we had had to rescue him on foot, I believe his survival would have been in this outfit.”

The rescue was filmed by mountain rescue.

An escapade that could have turned into tragedy. The emergency services regret that their incessant calls for caution are not heard. “That becomes regular. People find themselves trapped without equipment. They are only aware of danger when they are confronted with it.”indicates the PGHM of Hautes-Pyrénées. In recent weeks, several interventions to rescue poorly equipped people have been carried out.

Emergency services who are already worried about the day of January 12. This Sunday Météo France places the departments of Hautes-Pyrénées, Ariège and Haute-Garonne on yellow alert for avalanche risks.

“We are at risk 3 on a scale of 5. It is the worst for us. People believe that it is not a major risk but it is precisely in these moments that we have the most interventions, because people are less cautious. the officer worries.

The conditions in the mountains are particular with a frozen and hard underlayer covered by the snowfall of the last 24 hours. “It’s powder that settles on a hard slab. The wind has moved piles of snow. Snow that doesn’t stick.”

All of which creates a particularly unstable coat. PGHM emergency services are expecting a day of interventions for January 12.

The fresh snow and bright sunshine expected for this Sunday should attract many people to the mountains.
