In Morocco, the National Center for Studies and Research on Underwater Heritage, under the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, announced the discovery of the wrecks of two archaeological ships off the coast of the town of El Jadida.
This discovery is part of an underwater and underwater archaeological research program, which aims to discover new underwater archaeological sites and to carry out archaeological documentation of other sites already discovered, reports the Center, cited by the MAP agency.
These are the wrecks of two metal ships, one near the beach in the town of El Jadida and the other near the entrance to the port, adds the same source.
According to the first descriptions of the wrecks, these ships probably date from the second half of the 19th century, the peak period of the activities of the ancient port of El Jadida, considered at the time as one of the main commercial ports of Morocco .
Historical data and maritime charts report several maritime accidents at the entrance to the port of El Jadida, which led to the sinking of several ships, including « l’Alcyne », “The Papin”, “Morocco”, “The Marne” et “The Amazon”.
These accidents are mainly due to the difficulty of access to the port, particularly before the construction of the breakwaters, as well as unfavorable weather conditions.
