Extreme cold vigilance triggered for the first time in France this winter: the departments concerned

This weekend, temperatures are dropping. To the point that Météo France decided, this Saturday January 11, 2025, to trigger the extreme cold vigilance in several departments starting tomorrow.

Seven departments on alert

In detail, seven departments are on yellow alert. These are:

• Aveyron
• Cantal
• Corrèze
• The Creuse
• Haute-Loire
• The Loire
• Lozere

Almost all of France frozen

If seven departments are on alert, it is indeed a large part of France which woke up to frost this Saturday morning.

Temperatures drop particularly in the part north and north-east of France.

On Sunday January 12, 2025, these frosts will become widespread due to “clear weather overnight and the persistence of this cold air which reached France from the north-east”, explains Guillaume Séchet, meteorologist.

Activation of the extreme cold plan

The severe cold characterized by Météo France therefore allows the authorities to activate, at the departmental or regional level, the extreme cold plan. This makes it possible to offer more accommodation to the most vulnerable, and to strengthen the 115 service.

Indeed, Météo France reminds us that the cold can have very serious consequences on the body (hypothermia and frostbite), particularly among the most vulnerable, newborns and homeless people.
