This year in Valais, more than 96,000 people – or around a quarter of the canton’s population – should benefit from an individual reduction in health insurance premiums (RIP). This represents 7,000 more beneficiaries than in 2024, including 6,000 children.
“In 2025, particular emphasis will be placed on reducing premiums for middle-class children”, which “are particularly heavy” on families, the State of Valais said in a press release on Friday. For adults, the income limits giving entitlement to an RIP will remain unchanged.
In detail, the subsidies will be distributed between individuals and families of modest economic condition (55%), beneficiaries of supplementary benefits to AVS/AI (27%) and people on social assistance (8%). The balance is intended to cover the premiums of people holding a certificate of default of goods (9%).
The Valais authorities point out that in principle, the beneficiaries are determined automatically on the basis of 2023 tax data and the subsidies are already deducted from the 2025 premium bill in December. The beneficiaries will be notified personally in February.
Policyholders who have experienced a change in their family or financial situation in 2024 must send a special request to the canton’s Compensation Fund, the press release specifies.
-For the record, the Valais Grand Council agreed, last December, to increase the amounts devoted to RIP by 5 million francs. Added to the additional 9.2 million francs allocated by the Confederation, these 5 million bring the overall envelope for the 2025 RIP to 268.5 million.
