Iranian justice announced Thursday that a Swiss national accused of espionage had committed suicide in the prison of Semnan, a city in the east of the country.
“This morning, a Swiss citizen committed suicide in Semnan prison,” said Mizan Online, the judiciary’s media outlet, adding that the inmate had been “arrested by security agencies for espionage and that his case was under investigation.
The Swiss national, who was not identified, had asked his cellmate to bring him food from the prison cafeteria and “took advantage of this moment when he was alone to commit suicide,” according to Mizan Online .
The prison authorities “immediately intervened to (try to) save his life, but their efforts were in vain,” added the same source.
Mizan did not provide details on the date of the Swiss’ arrest or how he committed suicide.
Through its head of communications Nicolas Bideau, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) indicated that it had been informed by Iran. “We are in contact with the authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death,” he said on X.
