In 2024these are 37 procedures which were carried out to eliminate wrecks and ships abandoned on the coast.

22 of them have already given rise to a decision to forfeit ownership and to the dismantling of the vessels.

“This represented a total cost to the State of more than 12 000 €, which includes the costs of removal and transport to the deconstruction company,” announces the Côtes-d’Armor prefecture, Wednesday January 8, 2025.

Around sixty abandoned boats

The Côtes-d’Armor Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM) carried out a inventory wrecks and abandoned ships on the department's coastline.

Which boats are considered abandoned?

Any floating device, including maritime drones, or vessel in a buoyant state, is considered abandoned when there is no longer a crew on board, or when no guarding or maneuvering measures are taken. It may then present a danger or hinder the exercise of maritime, coastal or port activities in a prolonged manner.
Some wrecks or abandoned vessels or their owner are not identifiable (no registration number or name for the boat, owner not identified following a sale, etc.). In all these cases, the property forfeiture procedure allows the State to intervene.

After this census, “the objective is to evacuate them from the public maritime domain and, most often, given their condition, to have their deconstruction ».

However, it is necessary to take into account minimum six months procedure known as “forfeiture of ownership” (from then on the owner no longer has rights to his boat).

Note that “the sanctions are provided against the owners of wrecks and abandoned ships.

What to do with these boats?

It is the Association for Eco-Responsible Pleasure (APER) which is the national eco-organization which manages the deconstruction and recycling end-of-life pleasure and sports boats.

It is approved by the Ministry of Ecological TransitionBiodiversity, Forest, Sea and Fisheries.

Owners of recreational vessels at the end of their life can request the support of their deconstruction on the APER website.

The cost of deconstructing the ship is fully covered by the association. Only transport to the processing center remains the responsibility of the ship owner.
