The Sangomar oil field, located in western Senegal, recorded annual crude oil production of around 16.9 million barrels in 2024, 5.2 million barrels above the initial target of 11.7 million barrels. This information was communicated this Tuesday by the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines via its Facebook page.
The ministry specifies that of the total production, approximately 16.4 million barrels were sold on the international market, thus marking a significant success for Senegal, which entered the era of oil production on June 2, 2024, after a decade of preparation following the discovery of deposits in Sangomar.
The Sangomar oil field, which is located about a hundred kilometers south of Dakar, includes twelve active wells. Production reached a peak of 2.96 million barrels last December, with three cargoes totaling 2.94 million barrels traded on the international market during the same month.
The exploitation of this oil site is ensured by the Australian company Woodside Energy, which continues to supervise operations, thus strengthening Senegal’s position on the international oil scene. The ministry welcomes these results, which exceed initial expectations, and underlines the importance of this production for the Senegalese economy.
With these performances, Senegal asserts itself as an emerging player in the oil industry, promising a prosperous future for the country’s energy sector.
