The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) has taken a step forward in its fight against cyber threats. Since January 1, 2025, it has had two new specialized units: the “Market Access and Cybersecurity” section (MC) and the “Network Security and Services” section (SND).

These organizational changes are part of the National Cyber Strategy and the National Critical Infrastructure Protection Strategy. They aim to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (OFCS) and the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FOAE). A reorganization and three new positions were necessary, according to a press release.

Cybersecurity for connected devices?

From August 1, Swiss consumers should benefit from increased protection for their wireless devices connected to the internet. From smartphones to baby monitors, including connected watches and toys, all these devices will have to meet strict cybersecurity requirements, it is indicated in the same text.

The MC section will be responsible for enforcing these new standards, based on the OFCOM Ordinance on telecommunications installations. These measures aim to prevent unauthorized access to personal data, monetary fraud and malicious use of devices for cyberattacks.

Stronger telecoms infrastructure

The SND section will play a crucial role in maintaining and strengthening the security of telecommunications networks and services. Its main objective is to ensure the resistance and proper functioning of the infrastructures on which more and more applications and services used by individuals and businesses depend.

This new unit will implement and develop legal requirements to strengthen the networks, in particular against disruptions to the electricity supply. It will also ensure compliance with directives regarding network security and unauthorized manipulation of telecoms installations.
