Like the Loiret in recent weeks, the wolf has therefore invested in Maine-et-Loire. The prefecture confirmed this Monday, January 7, the presence of the animal in the department. The French Biodiversity Office formally has the wolf in a photograph taken on the night of December 7 to 8, 2024 in La Séguinière. The animal is also suspected of having attacked two flocks of sheep in the same area last month.
Individuals born last spring are gradually taking their place within the pack, so some animals are currently dispersing in search of a new territory. In a few days, the wolf can travel up to 800km before finding a place to settle.
A protected species
The Maine-et-Loire prefecture will soon bring together the departmental wolf monitoring unit. Communication will also be made to breeders, who can benefit from 1is January of aid for the acquisition and training of herd protection dogs. The wolf is not an animal considered dangerous to humans. The risk of attack is not zero, especially if it feels in danger, but the canine does not consider humans as prey and tends to flee their presence. The wolf is a protected species, attacking it is punishable by law.
