Many Departmental Archives portals offer modules for collaborative indexing of images by Internet users, particularly for civil status and censuses, or even personnel registers. But much rarer are those who offer this system for other collections. The Landes Archives are therefore particularly innovative in encouraging Internet users to now index the notary directories which are digitized and online.

This stimulating operation currently only concerns half of the directories (collection paid by notaries to court registries) and therefore applies to the names registered in the Landes notary directories covering the period 1798-1940. The other directories will be opened for indexing gradually.

A user guide, in the form of an online PDF (downloadable), explains in great detail what you need to do to participate in indexing: you must first create your personal space, then, a Once identified, you go to the indexing page of notary tables and directories. There, filter the list of results to reach the document you wish to index, open the advanced tools pane (the one with the…) and click on the pencil icon: you are ready to make a new annotation.

Participating in this collective project will make it possible to offer all users, free of charge, easier access to these documents of great interest. For genealogists, in fact, they are the key to access to marriage contracts, wills, inventories after death, etc. The results of collaborative indexing of notaries' directories are added to the base called “ Surnames », which globally queries all the indexed collections of the Landes archival portal.
