Senegal is disbursing a sum of 5 billion CFA francs to compensate victims who suffered from political and pre-electoral demonstrations that occurred between February 1, 2021 and February 25, 2024.

By press release, the Senegalese government informs the population on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 of the adoption of criteria to be met to benefit from funds intended to support ex-detainees and other victims of political and pre-electoral demonstrations.

5 billion to relieve the victims

In the press release, the authorities specify that the five billion CFA francs remain “intended to support ex-detainees and other victims of pre-electoral violence from February 1, 2021 to February 25, 2024”.

The Interministerial Committee determines the conditions for enjoying this sum. This committee was established by Order of the Ministry of Family and Solidarity No. 17 450 MFS/SG/CAJ of July 30, 2024.

In the Amended Finance Law 2024 adopted by the National Assembly on December 28, 2024, the sum to compensate the victims is included.

“The Ministry of Family and Solidarity has mobilized the resources of the General Delegation for Social Protection and National Solidarity (DGPSN) to take care of the medical care of people injured during political demonstrations during the mentioned period,” indicates the press release.

Among the victims to be taken into account, the press release mentions 112 cases of “extreme emergency” which relate to “serious injuries and trauma”.

It also indicates that these cases have already been covered by a government solidarity fund. “on the basis of supporting documents”.

On December 27, 2024, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko mentioned the government’s desire to repeal the amnesty law on facts relating to political violence between 2021 and 2024.

“The government reiterates its commitment to supporting the victims and ensuring national solidarity towards all those affected by these events, just as it has done for years in favor of the most vulnerable groups”specifies the government spokesperson, Mr. Amadou Moustapha Njeck Sarre.
