It will be moderated by Senator Jérôme Durain, co-author of an authoritative report on drug trafficking in and the measures to be taken. A meeting proposed in a context where voices are being raised to warn about the extent of the phenomenon in the archipelago.

Eric Maurel threw a stone into the pond. To those who still doubted it, the Attorney General of Guadeloupe, whose area of expertise extends to Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, revealed that drug trafficking gangs are already established in our islands. These criminals are even extending their influence and organizing their illicit activities better and better, based on violence, score-settling or even arms trafficking.

Measures to be taken to remedy this situation are the subject of a report dated May 14, 2024; that of the senatorial commission of inquiry into the impact of drug trafficking in France, chaired by PS senator from Saône-et- Jérôme Durain. This document identifies overseas territories in general, particularly the French West Indies and Guyana, as territories where the fight against drug trafficking must be intensified.

Among the levers suggested, it is a question of making international cooperation (notably with Venezuela and Colombia) a pillar of the fight against drug trafficking. Resources must also be allocated to security forces in overseas territories.

Jérôme Durain is in Guadeloupe this Monday January 6 and Tuesday January 7, 2025.
He was the guest of Claude Danican, in the section “The Big Interview” from Guadeloupe La 1erathe radio, in the morning. For the Socialist, the Antilles-Guyana and cocaine are two central subjects concerning drug trafficking in France.

It's not just Cocaine. There is crime and arms trafficking, which has become much more intense with cocaine. In the announcements that have been made, for the moment, few concern Guadeloupe, which is on the front line (…).

Senator Jérôme Durain will host this evening, alongside Senator Victorin Lurel, a conference-debate freely open to the public on the theme “Drug trafficking in Guadeloupe: how to deal with it? How to answer it?“. This meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Rémy Nainsouta room (Pointe-à-Pitre) is organized with the Association of Mayors of Guadeloupe and its president Jocelyn Sapotille.

For Patrice Abdallah, departmental secretary of the SGP-Police-FO union, nothing new under the sun! The police officer is perfectly aware of the fact that criminal organizations are perfectly organized in the Guadeloupean archipelago.

It was not for lack of having sounded the alarm, to denounce what was going on. Colleagues in the field were well aware of what was happening and saw that things were going to get worse. However, we were never heard. Today, we hear that the situation calls into question the institutions but, since we have been talking about it, we should have already taken measures.

Once again, the trade unionist mentions the lack of staff from which the national police suffer locally: lack of investigators, a promised nautical brigade which is not yet forthcoming, lack of means of control, etc.

From a place of transit, Guadeloupe has become a place of trafficking.
Everywhere in the country, at the bottom of buildings, but also in private salons, drugs are exchanged for money and consumed. Eric Maurel affirms that all strata of the population are now concerned.
