in 2024, more rain and heat in Moselle

In several respects, the year 2024 was remarkable in in terms of weather, with a lot of precipitation and strong heat.

While 14 departments were on orange “wind” vigilance this Monday, notably the Meuse, and on yellow vigilance for the Moselle, it is time to take stock for the department. First remarkable point for Arnaud Gleizes (forecaster and climatologist for the north-east at Météo ), the year 2024 in Moselle was particularly hot.

According to data from the North-East section of Météo France, the average temperature was 11.5 degrees in Lorraine, 11.4° in Moselle, or 1.2 degrees higher than normal. Which makes it the 3rd warmest year since the start of records behind 2023 and 2022. Note that all months of the year were above normal, especially a very mild month of February, with +4, 7° compared to usual.

Lots of rain and never dry soils

Second event: 2024 was also marked by episodes of rain and floods, like last May, with unprecedented accumulations in Moselle. “We are in excess of 25%.” It is the 5th rainiest year in Lorraine since 1950, and the rainiest since 2001. In Moselle, it is the 3rd rainiest year, after 1981 and 2001.

Finally, the last point to emphasize is the lack of sunshine in the region. If the first warm rays were slow to arrive in Moselle, the region and the department experienced a 10% drop in sunshine compared to normal, or 150 hours less. In the department, it is the least sunny year since 2016. “In the absence of heatwaves, with the heavy rains this summer, we did not experience the usual dry weather. This year, the soils remained humid and there was no drought,” notes the specialist.
