It’s been almost two years since David Goffin last played for Belgium in the Davis Cup. Our number 1 is once again left on the sidelines to face Chile.
Belgium will once again play without David Goffin (ATP 53) during the first round of Davis Cup qualifying against Chile, on February 1 and 2 in Hasselt. The Belgian N.1 does not appear in the selection unveiled Monday, on the Belgian federation’s X account, by captain Steve Darcis.
For this first round, Darcis will count on Zizou Bergs (ATP 66), Raphaël Collignon (ATP 119) and Alexander Blockx (ATP 205) in singles as well as Sander Gillé (ATP 37 in doubles) and Joran Vliegen (ATP 35 in doubles) for double. That is to say the same team which played in the group stage of the last edition, last September in Bologna.
Goffin has not played in the Davis Cup since the defeat in the first round of qualifying against South Korea in February 2023.
The match against Chile will be played in the best of five matches, with a place in the 2nd qualifying round at stake, which will take place in September under the same format.
Belgium’s opponent, in the event of victory, will be Australia (N.2) or Sweden. The seven winners of the 2nd round will join the Final 8, the final phase, for which Italy, the defending champion, is automatically qualified as host country.
In 2024, Belgium were eliminated in the group stage, finishing third in their group, in Bologna, behind Italy and the Netherlands and ahead of Brazil. Steve Darcis’ players beat the Dutch but lost the other two matches.
