Faced with the emergence of new phenomena of violence in certain neighborhoods on the island. The feeling of insecurity is growing among residents. Some decided to act. A citizen collective is proposing a meeting with elected officials and local stakeholders to try to find concrete solutions.

The recent episodes of violence in Saint-André have challenged the population of Island on the subject of insecurity.

This increase in violence is also observed by elected officials who point the finger at the responsibility of the State.

A delinquency which has pushed citizens to react by launching a collective movement which aims to find concrete solutions to stop the violence on the island. A meeting between elected officials and citizens is planned for this Sunday at the Colosse.

So are these isolated acts of violence? without talking about a phenomenon that is growing? What do the numbers say?

If the figures for the year 2024 have not yet been published. The prefecture takes stock of the year 2023 compared to 2022.

We note general delinquency increasing by 16.5%, + 127% in acts of animal abuse, attacks on physical integrity which increased by 18% in one year and an increase of 24% in violence and insults against persons responsible for the public authority. And finally an 89% increase in drug-related offenses.

The figures must nevertheless be put into perspective because Reunion remains rather protected from acts of violence compared to Guyana, Mayotte, Guadeloupe or even .
