Emmanuel Macron continues to fall in the hearts of the French. According to an Odoxa-Backbone Consulting survey for Le Figaro, published this Friday, a large majority of French people say they are in favor of the resignation of the French president.

The departure of the Head of State is now desired by 61% of French people, i.e. 2 points more than in December, and 7 points more than in September, according to this survey carried out on January 2 and 3, 2025. In the In detail, 85% of supporters of the National Rally (RN) and 92% of those of La insoumise demand his resignation. Only supporters of the Macronist party are mostly opposed (90%).

Controversy in the land of polls

Still according to this poll, the president worries 71% of French people, and 65% of them consider that he is not attached to democratic values. Pollsters are divided as to their legitimacy in questioning the French about a resignation of the president. The director of Ifop, Frédéric Dabi, declared on Thursday on Sud Radio “refuse to ask questions” about the president's departure, sparking controversy in particular in the ranks of the Insoumis who accused him of bias.

“It is not up to a polling institute to ask this type of question which could be exploited in the political field,” he argued. “Spontaneously, there are almost no French people who call for their departure from the Elysée, the French remain on a 2027 agenda,” added the pollster based on their latest survey carried out for the JDD.

A question “in the public debate”

A position that Céline Bracq, general director of Odoxa, does not share: “We would indeed refuse to ask questions which would be completely out of step with the public debate, but today the resignation of Emmanuel Macron is in the public debate, politicians ask for it, journalists talk about it in their articles,” she retorts.

“From there, I don’t see why, we shouldn’t know what the French think,” adds the pollster. The survey was conducted online with a sample of 1,005 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over. Margin of error between 1.4 and 3.1 points.
