S9th at the break with a late match to be played this Saturday (6 p.m.) in Lebon against AS Cannes, the ACFC has had a satisfactory first part of the season enhanced by a good run in the Coupe de France.
If he remains focused on the objective of remaining in National 2, coach David Giguel has no complexes about his future opponents. His goal: to play every match to win in order to finish as high as possible.
The editorial team advises you
How do you judge your team's first part of the season?
David Giguel. It's complicated to draw conclusions mid-season. We are on the right track in any case. It's up to us to maintain all of this, to continue to want to progress every day in training. We have to stay hungry when we play a championship match in order to be happy when we draw a final conclusion at the end of the season.
We already have two matches to play in Lebon to complete the first leg in a comfortable position in relation to our maintenance objective.
It is all the more encouraging as the results and quality of the game have progressed throughout the season.
It's true. We changed a lot of players in the offseason, especially defensively. We also experienced some difficulties with our central hinge which we often had to reform. Some adjustments had to be made. The team then progressed in many areas. We have guys who listen, who want to move forward individually and collectively. It allows you to progress.
Unlike previous seasons, you are performing well in Lebon. Is it a source of pride to offer victories to the public?
For the players and staff, it's always better to win at home. We play in front of our loved ones. It’s important to us to show our best face. It's great to win in front of your home crowd.
What are the areas for progress?
We have to be more realistic defensively and offensively. We created a lot of situations in our matches but we weren't killer enough. During the last match at Marignane (1-0 defeat), we must never lose. We had situations to open the scoring.
We must continue to offer games and take risks at home. We did it pretty well even if we were sometimes stung on transitions. We conceded avoidable goals.
Several young people have managed to break through this season. Is it satisfying?
Getting young people trained at the club to play has always been our desire. Noah Marchesseau was for a moment its identity. Others are in the process of taking over. I would sign straight away to field a team with eleven guys born in Angoulême. It's better to play with locals than to look for players from outside. But it's hard to find guys who have the talent to play in a championship as difficult as National 2.
Have your ambitions evolved since the start of the season?
The ambition must be to win every match. We prepare each week to progress individually and collectively in order to be better than the opponent on the weekend. Every weekend is more important than the last.
What is missing at the ACFC to aim for promotion to the National?
There is no real recipe for getting out of this division. It's a complicated marathon. Sometimes it's your year. You have the luck of the champion. Some teams who were playing to maintain managed to move up. We have to try to do better with not much more means. We must be even better in the areas we master on the field.
