Several Alsatian ski resorts are closed this Thursday, January 2, due to snowstorms at altitude. In the summits, gusts exceeded 100 km/h, reaching 134 km/h at Markstein.
The stations of Ballon d'Alsace, Markstein, Grand Ballon, Lac Blanc, Gaschney, Tanet and Thanner-Hubel are affected. Weather conditions should allow the stations to reopen tomorrow, Friday January 3.
These storms are due to “passage of a cold front,” explains Christophe Mertz, meteorologist and creator of the Atmo-Risk site. “By this evening, there should be between 10 and 20 cm of snow at 1000 meters altitude.” The precipitation has pushed Météo France to place Alsace on yellow snow and ice alert.
Traffic conditions in the Vosges are also impacted and “traffic is tricky on roads above 700m altitude,” according to the European Community of Alsace. The D214 is closed until further notice, between the Tour du Champ du feu to the crossroads with the D414.
But even despite the improvement in weather conditions in the coming days, caution is still required on the roads. “The cold front will move towards Switzerland this evening. But there is a strong risk of icy conditions overnight and tomorrow morning,” warns Christophe Mertz.
