Météo- places the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department on yellow avalanche alert due to expected snowfall in the massifs.

Due to the snowfall forecast on the heights of the massifs, the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and that of Hautes-Alpes are placed on yellow avalanche alert.

“A risk of avalanche with spontaneous departures is present, with a maximum risk of triggering by the passage of a skier or hiker,” indicates the prefect of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in a press release.

According to Météo-France, the risk of avalanche is considered “significant” on all of the massifs of the Southern Alps except that of Mercantour.

Off-piste skiing is strongly discouraged

During this vigilance, the authorities invite mountain users to be vigilant. “If you practice hiking, ski touring or off-piste skiing, you go at your own risk and involve the safety of rescuers in the event of an accident,” indicates the prefect.

The prefecture also asks skiers in the area not to leave open, groomed and marked slopes.

To avoid being caught in an avalanche, it is also advisable to check the weather forecast and not leave alone.

“Make sure you have trained yourself, equip yourself with a DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector), a reflector, a shovel and an individual probe,” concludes the prefecture.
