Swimming was prohibited on January 2, 2025 and until further notice in the Manapany basin in Saint-Joseph. A “Striped Knit” type sea snake, potentially venomous, could have been observed there according to the town hall.

In the middle of the summer vacation period, ideal for swimming, the Saint-Joseph town hall has just banned access to the Manapany basin this Thursday, January 2, 2025.

In question, the report of a sea serpent of type “Striped knit” in the basin, explains the municipality in a press release.

“Access to the pool as well as swimming are strictly prohibited from this Thursday, January 2, 2025. Expertise is underway to allow the site to reopen as soon as possible. Until then, please respect this ban”

If it is indeed a snake “Striped knit” (genre Laticauda), this animal is more present in New Caledonia than in . It is considered not very aggressive, although venomous. We will have to wait for the “expertise” from the town hall of Saint-Joseph in order to know if it is really this species, or another, similar one, which could have been confused with the “Striped knit“.

A few years ago, in 2015, a similar reptile was observed on La Saline beach. Was it a “Striped knit“? The question was also asked at the time.

Because the “Striped knit“common in New Caledonia can be confused, due to its stripes, both with certain small moray eels and with the banded eel snake, already observed previously in Reunion.
