It is 10:30 a.m. on this first day of the year 2025, when on the one hand the town of Verdun (Meuse) slowly wakes up, and on the other hand a handful of courageous people set off into the icy waters of the Pré-l’Evêque lakereports L’Est Républicain. With a temperature of 5 degrees in the water and a biting cold on the banks, the people of Verdun took their first swim of the year.
After a forced cancellation in 2024, bathers would not have missed this event for anything in the world. As a reminder, this challenge has existed here in Verdun for more than 25 years. And it’s not a few degrees less that will deter these lovers of tradition…
Thirty minutes of freezing endurance
If some, like Jacques and Charly, only made a brief splash in the water, others went the distance. Joan, Gilles and Sylvie stayed thirty minutes in the body of water.
“She’s good!” » jokes Joan, well equipped with a waterproof suit, before quickly qualifying her remarks in the face of the biting cold. Once out, the smell of coffee hung in the air to warm the swimmers. But for many, only a long hot shower will cure the chills.
And for those who weren't prepared enough this year? An appointment has already been made for 2026, still in the icy waters of Pré-l'Evêque.
