A Radiant Year for Culture and Art

In 2024, Senegal has asserted itself on the world cultural scene thanks to innovative artistic and literary initiatives, according to an article in Sud Quotidien. The year was marked by significant events and emblematic figures in different fields of culture.

Literature: A New Generation of Writers

The writer Farid Abou-Ledheni-Desart, a former oil engineer restructured into an author of novels, captivated the public with his innovative work. With positive reviews, his book reflects a new generation of ambitious writers in Senegal, supports Adama Sall, cultural journalist, in his writings. The Women’s Book Fair, orchestrated by Emina Seck, brought together strong female voices such as Jariso and Sokhna Benga, exploring the challenges and diversity of women’s writing.

Festivals: Celebrating Cultural Diversity

The Africa Diaspora Festival, the first edition of which was held in December in Dakar, highlighted pan-Africanism and African cultural wealth. This festival paid tribute to the Senegalese riflemen through a memorable show, “Thiaroye 44”.

The River Festival, led by Sokhna Benga aboard the boat Bouél Bogdad, combined river heritage and literature, offering a unique experience of Senegalese waterways.

Contemporary : The Dakar Biennale

The Dakar Biennale has established itself as a pillar of contemporary African art with record attendance and international recognition. Local and international artists were honored, highlighting Senegal’s central role in the global art scene.

The Museum of Black Civilizations, directed by Mouhamed Ly, opened its doors to a wider audience, promoting collective appropriation of Senegalese cultural heritage while paying tribute to historical events such as the massacres of Thiaroye 44, as reported by Sud Quotidien.

and Cinema: Success and Recognition

2014 saw the rise of many Senegalese artists. St. Louis native Amodeus gained notoriety through bold collaborations, while Wally Seck delivered an unforgettable concert at the Adidas Arena, cementing his international status.

Queen Bizz, for her part, has emerged as both an artist and a political activist, adding a committed dimension to her music.

In the field of cinema, Mati Diop won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale with a documentary dealing with the restitution of royal treasures, enriching the debate on African cultural heritage.

Regions such as Fatick, Kaolack and Ziguinchor still require increased support to access these cultural initiatives, says Sud Quotidien, a context which underlines the importance of decentralization of cultural actions.
