On December 31, a significant breakthrough in the West African energy sector was announced by the Oil Ministries of Senegal and Mauritania. In a joint statement relayed by iGFM, the two countries proudly declared the official opening of the first well of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project.

This significant step is seen as an essential milestone in the realization of this ambitious project. The opening of this first well not only symbolizes the culmination of the technical operations carried out to date, but it also paves the way for the imminent start of gas marketing, an operation planned very soon.

“The opening of gas wells is a historic step for Senegal. It reflects our common vision with Mauritania to make the GTA project a successful model of energy collaboration,” declared Mr. Birame Souleye Diop, Minister of Oil of Senegal.

The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project, which straddles Senegalese and Mauritanian territorial waters, is designed to become one of the largest gas fields in West Africa. Its production should play a key role in the diversification of energy sources and the economic development of the two nations, while strengthening their bilateral cooperation in the energy field.

The enthusiasm generated by this announcement reflects the ambitions of both countries in the exploitation of natural resources and underlines the growing importance of natural gas on the African continent, especially in the era of global energy transition.
