“Once again, the past year has been eventful,” declared the President of the Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter during her New Year’s speech. But Switzerland, “strong”, has the “capacity to act”. She can approach the new year “with confidence”.
After a “hectic” year 2024, “I would like to tell you that the next one will be calmer,” declared the Federal Councilor from the Abbey of Saint Gall. “But I don’t know any more than you what 2025 will be like.”
“On the other hand, I know that we can approach the new year with confidence,” she added. “Switzerland is strong and has the capacity to act.” The St. Galloise highlighted the humility of the Swiss population. Direct democracy works in his eyes partly thanks to this quality.
“Compromise allows us to find solutions”
She emphasized the importance of recognizing and accepting the demands of others. “It is the compromise which often makes it possible to find solutions likely to obtain a majority,” explained Karin Keller-Sutter, who is taking over the presidency of the Confederation this year for the first time.
She was delighted that the country’s democracy and the rule of law were functioning, praising the sense of community of the Swiss. “We can find solutions,” declared the Minister of Finance. “Each of us has a role to play in this common project. And this also applies to 2025,” concluded the President of the Confederation.
