Delegations from the High Council of State of Tripoli and the House of Representatives of Benghazi, the two rival Libyan assemblies, met in Bouznika, Morocco, to agree on collaboration with the UN to organize free and fair elections.
The main objective of the discussions is to design a roadmap to emerge from the political crisis while ensuring a process driven by the Libyans themselves.
Stephanie Koury, UN Deputy Special Representative for Libya, stressed that the country has the potential to become a model of stability and prosperity in the region. She insisted on the need for strong political will and a commitment from Libyan actors to avoid any unilateral action which could aggravate divisions. She also called on international partners to coordinate their efforts to support this process.
Since its division in 2014, Libya remains mired in political crises, worsened by the failure of the 2021 elections. However, both assemblies have committed to forming a government of national unity and implementing institutional reforms, financial and security to restore stability.
