A cold snap hits Nantes and Loire-Atlantique: what do you need to know?

In recent days, -Atlantique, and more particularly , has experienced a significant drop in temperatures. This phenomenon, although notable, does not meet the official criteria for a severe cold spell defined by Météo-, but it remains sufficient to impact the daily lives of residents.

Temperatures below seasonal norms

The forecast predicts temperatures hovering around 0°C during the night, with maximums not exceeding 5 to 8°C during the day. These values, well below seasonal norms, create a particularly cold winter atmosphere for the region.

Despite the absence of snow or persistent frost, this drop in temperatures has a significant effect on the most vulnerable populations.

Strengthening emergency systems

Faced with these conditions, the Loire-Atlantique prefecture activated level 1 of the “severe cold” plan. Additional accommodation places have been opened in Nantes and Saint-Nazaire to accommodate homeless people. These measures aim to guarantee their safety from the risk of hypothermia.

How to prepare for this cold snap?

To face this period, a few simple actions can make the difference:

Protect yourself: Multiply layers of clothing, and favor insulating materials such as wool.

Heat your home with caution: Check your heating appliances to avoid any risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Looking out for others: Think about your neighbors, especially the elderly or isolated, who may need help.

Changing weather

This cold snap should fade slightly in the middle of next week, with temperatures once again close to 10°C. However, caution remains in order in the face of still unpredictable weather conditions during this season.

Stay informed of forecasts to adapt your activities and travel.
