The United Arab Emirates, once again, stands out as the theater and center of extremely important diplomatic maneuvers, which will revolutionize the region. HM King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani are currently and simultaneously there, in a context of historic rapprochement between Rabat, Nouakchott and Abu-Dhabi. Although the visits of the two Heads of State are officially described as “private”their coincidence intrigues and sparks a wave of speculation within diplomatic circles.
According to sources close to the matter, this common presence is not the result of chance. Mohammed VI and Mohamed Ould Ghazouani are expected to participate in working meetings with the President of the UAE, Mohammed Ben Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ). At the heart of these discussions would be a major strategic projectthe precise contours of which are still kept secret.
A tripartite Strategic Partnership with broader ambitions
Informed observers point out that this initiative could redefine regional alliances in North Africa and the Sahel. The UAE, already involved in several economic and infrastructure projects in Mauritania and Morocco, appears to be a natural partner to support this major project. According to a diplomatic source, “The ongoing discussions are crucial and could lead to an official announcement in the coming days.”
This initiative would pave the way for unprecedented tripartite cooperation, promoting joint projects in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy and regional security. “If this axis is consolidated, it could not only strengthen stability in North Africa and the Sahel, but also promote economic and political integration between these three countries,” adds our interlocutor.
A strong signal in the face of geopolitical reconfigurations
Mauritania, by recently carrying out reshuffles within its military apparatus, seems to be gradually moving away from Algerian influence. This change of course could strengthen ties with Morocco and the UAE, which share a common vision for the stability and development of the Sahel.
This rapprochement is part of a broader dynamic, where Morocco and the UAE are increasing initiatives to establish their regional leadership, while promoting lasting economic and security partnerships. For Mauritania, this alliance represents an opportunity to diversify its partnerships and benefit from structuring investments.
Towards an imminent historic announcement?
Speculation is rife as to the exact nature of the project that could be announced. Some see it as the beginnings of a large-scale initiative linked to the development of transnational infrastructure, others evoke large-scale energy projects or joint security and counter-terrorism programs.
This discreet summit, but potentially revolutionarycould be a prelude to an announcement which would mark a new era in relations between Rabat, Nouakchott and Abu Dhabi. If this initiative sees the light of day, it could redraw the map influences in the region and propel this tripartite axis to the forefront of new geopolitical configurations.
