Industrial snow was observed on Saturday December 28 in Seine-et-Marne. But what is this phenomenon?
Residents of Moissy-Cramayel, in Seine-et-Marne, woke up to snow in the streets on Saturday, December 28. Special feature: it is neither natural snow nor artificial snow but the result of air pollution, reported BFMTV. On the sidewalks and lawns, however, we have the impression that it is real snow.
“It takes several elements that come together” to form industrial snow according to meteorologist Patrick Marlière, director of Medias Weather. First, there is “the atmospheric situation with a lot of humidity”which has been the case for several days in Île-de-France. Afterwards, “you need frost, and therefore low temperatures in the early morning”Then “above all, pollution by the projection of fine particles into the atmosphere”. These fine particles can come from chimney fires or pollution released by vehicles.
A recurring phenomenon
To make this coat of snow appear, you need frost, humidity in the atmosphere and fine particles nearby. Industrial snow was last observed in the commune in January 2022. For Patrick Marlière, this phenomenon “is observed regularly, almost every year” almost everywhere in France. Certain sectors of Beauvais (Oise) and Nogent-sur-Oise were also under industrial snow this Saturday.
