This January 1, 2025, the Lyon Low Emission Zone (ZFE) will exclude Crit'Air 3 vehicles from its scope.
A major upheaval for hundreds of thousands of motorists, whether they are from Lyon, Villeurbanne, Caluirards, Vénissians, Brondillants or working in these cities.
However, there are some exemptions created by the Métropole de Lyon to try to hamper the daily lives of those who cannot afford to change cars or mode of transport as little as possible.
The Little Wheeler exemption
This is the solution found by the Métropole de Lyon to avoid rushing too many people. Whether your vehicle is Crit'Air 3, or even 4 or 5, it can continue to circulate. As long as you are a declared little rider! Open to individuals and professionals, the exemption is activated for 52 days per year authorized for movement in the ZFE, or the equivalent of one day per week. Nearly 6,000 “Petit Rouleur” accounts have been opened in the Lyon metropolitan area.
The staggered working hours exemption
What about people who work nights, and who cannot take public transport for the simple reason that there is none? Caregivers, cleaning staff, bakers, butchers, waiters, cooks or transport employees, they are subject to an exemption taken at the last minute by the Métropole de Lyon. Owners of a Crit'Air 3 vehicle, and who work odd hours, will have to provide a certificate from their employer in the event of an inspection. Please note, the exemption is only valid for one year and can only be renewed once. Environmentalists expect these employees to change cars after a while… or jobs!
