“The rector proposed”, Friday December 27, “that the start of the school year will be a week later”, declared, on franceinfo, Ambdilwahedou Soumaïla, mayor of Mamoudzou, two weeks after the passage of Cyclone Chido on Mayotte.

If this start of the school year, initially scheduled for January 13, is postponed in Mayotte, this will make it possible to restore certain schools. The mayor of Mamoudzou evokes “degradations” and “furniture theft” in schools, currently “used as emergency accommodation centers”. “On December 31, we will ask to recover the schools, because we have to prepare them,” announced Ambdilwahedou Soumaïla.

On the question of bangas, the mayor of Mamoudzou indicates that he “asked the government that the reconstruction of slums be completely banned.” “We need to put in the resources, we need to think about how to build differently in this area”he explains. “The challenge is not to make the same mistakes again.”

Monday, December 30, Prime Minister François Bayrou will travel to Mayotte, accompanied, among others, by the Minister of Education, Élisabeth Borne, and the Minister responsible for Overseas Territories, Manuel Valls. The mayor of Mamoudzou said he was waiting especially “that we rebuild differently, but with us”, local elected officials.
