After a bit of freezing rain this weekend, heat records are expected in Montreal as in Quebec at the start of the week, at the dawn of the New Year festivities.
“The snow cover risks taking a big hit with this rain and the very mild temperatures,” summarizes Kevin Cloutier, meteorologist at MétéoMédia.
Any layer of ice that forms over the weekend will only be temporary and will have disappeared to celebrate the arrival of 2025.
According to forecasts, daily heat records for December 30 could be broken on Monday.
A temperature of 8.6°C has been set for 2022 in Montreal, where it could be 10°C.
During that same year, the mercury rose to 5.3°C near Quebec and was expected to rise to 8°C this time.
Note, however, that certain amounts of rain are on the menu during this period.
Before the heat…
Above all, freezing rain will complicate travel on our roads and sidewalks on Saturday and Sunday.
According to Environment Canada, a maximum of 5 mm is expected in places, but lower quantities are predicted by these experts. An alert was also issued by Environment Canada on Friday.
The northwest of the province, as in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, will be affected, then it will be the turn of Outaouais, the Montreal region, the Laurentians and Lanaudière.
In Montreal, freezing rain should arrive in the afternoon and should continue until Sunday afternoon. Late Saturday evening, it will be the turn of the national capital, in particular, to taste it.
“The risk of rain, but also especially of freezing drizzle, remains present until Sunday morning for Montreal and Quebec,” predicts Kevin Cloutier.
“The accumulations of ice are not expected to be very large, but it is still more than enough for the roads to become slippery,” he adds.
