The crested wren (regulated) wins the prize for the smallest bird in Europe, although closely followed by another featherweight, the triple-banded wren (regulus ignicapilla). With its 5 grams and its 9 cm from beak to tail, the great crested wren mainly favors coniferous forests.
Royal golden line
Its song is composed of a repetition of high notes ending in an explosive trill. The sound emitted by this species has a high frequency that some ears are no longer able to detect.
The term “wren” comes from its golden line crossing the crown and which bristles during agonistic or nuptial behavior, thus recalling the crown of a king.
A slight sexual dimorphism exists in this bird, the color of the median streak of the crown varies from yellow-orange in the male to lemon yellow in the female.
Little restless
The almost incessant agitation of the bird and the changing perspective of the plumage colors due to the variable luminosity make this morphological difference difficult to distinguish in the field.
The distribution area of the great crested wren extends discontinuously in Eurasia and on certain islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
