In the United States, the scourge of shoplifting causes businesses to lose billions of dollars each year. The phenomenon has exploded since certain American states reduced the level of sanctions. California has decided to tighten the screw again.
In the video images, we can see images that Californians face daily. Gangs of thieves can be seen entering a store and looting whatever they can, leaving with their loot. The attacks are often lightning.
Sometimes, they are young women who enter as simple customers in a supermarket. They fill their baskets and leave without paying, seemingly nothing. Offenses that California has been punishing more heavily for more than a week, particularly in the event of a repeat offense. From now on, the offenses are reclassified as crimes, as the young women arrested discover.
Previously, thefts under $950 were considered minor offenses to relieve overcrowding in the prison system. With the adoption of this new proposal, stealing can now lead to prison.
