Piney-Pinecreek Airport has a unique feature: its landing strip straddles the border between the United States and Canada. But after seven decades in operation, the small airport near Roseau, Minn., and Piney, Man., will close for good Friday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said in a press release earlier this month that the airport was used very little and faced significant maintenance costs, particularly for the reconstruction of the runway, apron and terminal.

The international agreement necessary to operate the airport expires on December 26 and will not be renewed by the two airport owners.

The airport opened in 1953 with a grass runway. An asphalt runway was added in 1978. It is one of six airports straddling the border, but the only one with a hard runway.

It was often used by Americans traveling to Canada to hunt and fish.

Under the international agreement, airport staff were allowed to move from one country to another without going through the usual customs procedure to get to work.
