In a post-match press conference, the Girondins de Bordeaux coach, Bruno Irlesspoke about Stade Rennais' victory against his team. He first mentioned the good conditions of the match, which logically also helped Rennes.
“It can help someone who is in a lower division to exist. But there, the conditions, if they were excellent for us, they were also excellent for our opponent. It’s easier for them to establish their superiority, whether technical or physical, that there can be between Ligue 1 and National 2.”
Then, he responded to the remark that his team could compete with a Ligue 1, at least over 45 minutes.
“Yes… We had, analyzed Rennes. Tactically, we were ready. They stuck to the plan. We knew we could compete. There is the motivational aspect, the tactical aspect, and then you have the physical and technical aspect. Physically, we held on, I was even pleasantly surprised by some in the first period. Unfortunately, I knew it could be difficult over the 90 minutes. Again, this is not our main objective. We showed ourselves that we could progress. There are sectors where we have progressed, and others where we still see a difference. With a player from Rennes, I have the payroll for my entire squad. So fortunately Rennes proves individually that they can beat us in this kind of match, even if four goals is perhaps a bit much for the whole match… They were superior to us, and they deserve to go through this round.”
