Five citizens were awarded honorary citizenship by the City of Lyon.
As part of International Human Rights Day, since 2021 the City of Lyon has awarded honorary citizenship to human rights defenders in recognition of their courage and commitment.
Lyon town hall elevated five personalities to the rank of honorary citizen this Saturday, December 14. Among them, we find Sonia Dahmani, an imprisoned Tunisian lawyer. She denounced, during several radio and television broadcasts, the fate of migrants and the treatment of political prisoners in Tunisia.
We also find Muzdah Haem Rahimi, an Afghan activist and researcher in immunology at Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University, heavily invested in the training and development of scientific education for Afghan women.
A Belarusian personality, whom the City of Lyon wished to keep anonymous to ensure his protection, is also honored. This person, currently imprisoned for his fight, is engaged in the defense of human rights. By distinguishing this personality, the City of Lyon also wishes to pay tribute to the tens of thousands of political opponents and human rights defenders.
Finally, Alton Krenak, Brazilian writer campaigning for the rights of indigenous peoples, and Shireen Abu Akleh, Palestinian-American journalist murdered by Israeli army fire, were also selected.
The portraits and journeys of these personalities are on display until mid-January on the gates of the Town Hall.
