SENEGAL-AFRICA-ECONOMY / Dakar and Banjul want to increase the volume of their trade – Senegalese Press Agency

Dakar, Dec 20 (APS) – Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko stressed Thursday in Banjul the need for Senegal and the Gambia to work towards a massive increase in the volume of their trade.

”Between 2000 and 2023, commercial traffic between Senegal and the Gambia generated 117 billion CFA francs. The objective is to reach 500 billion francs in the years to come,” indicated the head of the Senegalese government.

He co-chaired with the Vice-President of the Gambia, Muhammed Jallow, the second session of the Senegalese-Gambian Economic Forum.

Ousmane Sonko particularly insisted on the importance of working towards a densification and revitalization of bilateral cooperation that has existed for several decades.

”We note an evolution, but efforts remain to be made. The 117 billion francs can be multiplied by ten. This is our goal. We must ensure that The Gambia is more useful to Senegal and vice versa, in all sectors,” he stressed.

He recalled the importance of increasing investments in the energy, infrastructure and transport sectors, but also in tourism, hydrocarbons and industry.

For his part, the Gambian vice-president welcomed the holding of this economic forum, believing that in addition to being a symbol of unity, it constitutes a practical mechanism for achieving common economic development objectives.
