The United Nations General Assembly has just adopted, by consensus, the biannual resolution presented by Morocco, on the “Promotion of sustainable tourism including ecotourism for poverty eradication and environmental protection”, celebrating 14 years of its presentation.
Thanks to the Kingdom’s strategic action in the tourism sector and the dynamic campaign led by Morocco within the United Nations, this resolution was co-sponsored by 109 Member States belonging to different regional groups.
In a UN context marked by several divergences, this resolution carried by the Moroccan delegation to the United Nations was able to cultivate a strong consensus on the key role of sustainable tourism in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the importance of investing in strengthening the resilience of the tourism sector in the face of climate shocks, natural crises and natural disasters as well as the importance of social protection for tourism workers.

Through the adoption of this resolution, Morocco, as a leader within the UN multilateral bodies on the theme of tourism, confirms its pioneering role on the national and international scene in terms of sustainable development.
This positioning reflects the Royal Vision which aims to stimulate investment in the tourism sector and to reinvent Moroccan tourism, through the roadmap of the Moroccan tourism strategy for 2026, aspiring to position the Kingdom among the 15 best global destinations, while increasing the contribution of tourism to the national economy and the creation of 200,000 new jobs.
Furthermore, during the adoption of this resolution, Morocco affirmed its determination to collaborate closely with the United Nations World Tourism Organization and other relevant UN agencies to strengthen sustainable and resilient tourism, including ecotourism, as a tool to combat poverty and promote sustainable development in its three economic, social and environmental dimensions.
This resolution highlighted a strong call for concerted action by countries and tourism stakeholders to strengthen investments in the sustainable and citizen-based social economy, as well as the importance of establishing policies and guidelines adapted, in accordance with national priorities and legislation, to promote and support sustainable and resilient tourism.
